Dalit Man Dies in Uttar Pradesh Police Custody After Sudden Collapse During Questioning
A Dalit man, Rajesh, died in Uttar Pradesh police custody after collapsing in Badaun. His family alleges he was beaten, while police cite footage showing no assault. An impartial inquiry has been ordered.
Rajesh was taken into custody in connection with the clash and was later declared dead at a hospital from cardiac arrest. A post-mortem examination found no injury marks on his body.
His family, however, has alleged that Rajesh was beaten during questioning. Police have rejected the allegation, pointing to footage that they say shows no assault. According to police, Rajesh suddenly collapsed after using the toilet while in custody.
The allegations have prompted further scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding his death. Senior Superintendent Ankita Sharma has ordered an impartial inquiry into the incident and said action will be taken if anyone is found responsible.
The case has also triggered online calls for accountability as questions remain over the events leading to Rajesh's death in police custody.
